History
In the 1980s a group of yoga practitioners conceived of a purpose-built centre in which to hold classes and retreats. This led to the incorporation of ‘Satsang Ashram Trust’ in 1989. After some years of fund-raising, with the help of a grant from the Enterprise Board and a bank loan, they were able to purchase the land on which An Sanctoir now stands. Planning permission was received in 1994 and the building was completed in 1996.

Since many other practices and activities besides yoga had found a home here, in 1998 the name ‘An Sanctoir’ was chosen from among many suggestions by the community. Charitable status was received in 2000.

In its twelve years of operation An Sanctoir has grown from strength to strength thanks to the support of an ever-evolving group of volunteers.

In 2007 we survived extensive damage to the floor caused by burst pipework. This stimulated us to improve kitchen facilities, foyer and wheelchair accessibility.

Structure

An Sanctóir is a Company Limited by Guarantee and a Registered Charity. Our Board of Directors (referred to as Trustees), with the support of a half-time paid administrator, carry the responsibility for the day-to-day running and the long-term health and growth of the Centre.

In addition to our legally binding Articles of Association we have been developing our Operating Procedures covering all areas of activity. This document reflects our particular ethos in how we work together, such as our commitment to working by a process of consensus.

In the past year we have been evolving an additional layer of structure with subgroups and committees focused on particular areas: land use, finances, publicity, fund-raising. These committees are intended to include interested members of the community as well as Trustees.

We also plan to form a group of Mentors, made up of past Trustees and others who will support and advise the Trustees, helping us to maintain clarity and focus in our long-term goals.

Finances

An Sanctoir has been showing a small surplus of income over expenses for the past few years. However we still carry a debt of some  €36,000 from the building of the Centre. The damage to the floor was covered by insurance, but we have taken the opportunity to replace defective heating and plumbing fixtures and to upgrade the kitchen. These costs, in addition to the loss of income while the Centre was closed for repairs, for which we were not insured, means that we now have an additional shortfall of nearly  €9,000.Your generosity in helping to fund our next phase of development is crucial and much appreciated.

Mission Statement

A multicultural community sanctuary to promote holistic activities and methods, encourage self-awareness, and nourish the human spirit, the land and the environment.

A place where people of all ages, races, cultures, and abilities are welcome, for learning, healing, connecting, exploring their creativity, re-establishing their links with the natural world, and celebrating the joys and challenges of living.
